There were sensational scenes when a large Coolangatta hotel on the Queensland border was destroyed by fire and also two adjoining cottages in the early morning. The hotel guests mainly women and‘girls, were almost overcome by smoke. They scrambled over a balcony down the, drainpipes and .sought refugee in tanks and screamed for help. A howling gale helped the progress of the flames and everywhere the whole building was an inferno. All the inmates reached safety. Three were , injured when they leapt to the ground 24 feet. . There were pitiful scenes in the street,, young women bemoaning the fate of their clothes and other .belonging. The total damage is fifteen thousand sterling.
