The most amazing scenes witnessed on any British golf course occurred at St. Andrews, when a large crowd, anxious to see tlie Tolley-. Jones match, became ungovernable. Play frequently horded oil the grotesque. Trouble began at the third bole. Hundreds (locked from other parts of the course and the luckless competitors at the other boles found their balls trodden into the turf. Jones at the fourth hole hit one of the ten thousand spectators. The match took a eheqifered course to the turn, first Tolley and the Jones taking the lead, and thereafter the crowd were quite unmanageable despite the efforts of the great array of stewards. One player or the other hit a spectator at almost every hole. The match was square at the eighteenth, where there were now fifteen thousand onlookers. The players rested while the stewards got the crowd orderly. The end came dramatically, Tolley hit n spectator near the green but chipped to within a yard of the Hole setting Jones a lmif-stymio. Jones failed to putt but gave Tolley a dead stymie. Tolley failed to lift the ball into the hole and Jones holed a foot putt for the match.
