I'hk. proposal to constitute n national park in South Westland for the region of high inland country between the Franz Josef and Fo.. Glaciers, and embracing also' the valley of the Copeland (a tributary ol the Karangarua ever).referred to last woek, is of interest, as indicating a closer interest in the fortunes of Westland by the authorities charged with the maintenance and development of the scenic territory of the Dominion, The two great glac:e:s refe:red to are unique in themselves, The rivers of ice winch they are, flow down into almost sub-tropical vegetation, and there are most arresting scientific features about the glaciers. Tho high hills dominating the glaciers as well ns the inter* veiling country, all carry a wealth of lorest country, which as a wonderful setting with the snow capped peaks of the Southern Alps as an eternal bacKground, This remarkable range of ooumry is traversed by a good road, stretching from Wniho Gorge to Welieka, and from every view point along the .route a remarkable hush and mountain panorama presents itself, The decision to declare the area a National Park and to preserve it ns such for posterity is a wise one, and should have general support,. The area is a large one and should be a great sanctuary for birdlife and the protection of native birds. On that- account alone there is much to commend the proposal, fbe whole territory is heavily wooded with a great variety of forest, and Is remarkable for its wonderful colouring. It is understood the preliminary steps regarding proclamations are in hand. The proposal has been investigated by officials and the area has been reported on in detail. The scientific recommendations arc all in favour of the proclamation as ensuring the preservation of a remarkable tract of country where . nature has been most lavish with uni- 1 que work for the delight of all who I have the inclination and the opportunity to inspect one of the most remarkab!f’> seed ions of the ,southern wonderland,
