ANNUAL MEETING

The fifty-sixth annual meeting of the Hokitika . Gas Coy., Ltd., was lield at the Company’s Office, Stafford Street yesterday at 5 p.tii. Mr D. J. Evans, Chairman of Directors, presided. All directors were present and three shareholders,, and the required number of shares was represented by proxies to constitute the legal quorum. *

The minutes of the previous annual meeting were confirmed. The following report was presented:—

DIRECTORS’ REPORT

The Directors in presenting this report, append the amiaul statement of accounts for the. year, duly audited, and certified correct., • •;

It is pleasing to be able to report a progressive year. The consumption has gone up, .and reached record figures for the Company. The make of gas is now approximately nine million feet. The Company- is reaping the advantage pf the late overhaul of the works,; and the installation of the. new holder and other plant, all making for greater efficiency and economy in the manufacture, of pis. During the year the Works Manager (Mr G. Heinz) carried, out a., number of small works, but important in themselves as further amplifying the reticulation and giving consumers a generally improved service. The Company was fortunate in. escaping very serious damage at the f.itnp of the earthquake visitation. The small holder was put out of gear some damage done to buildings, an' l ‘he reticulation service suffered, TV Manager and staff lost no time in attending to the dislocation, and repairs and renewals were effected without any special inconvenience to consumers. At the sajme time, the small holder was made more secure against any similar visitation,, while the buildings affected were strengthened. The reticulation service ’.vas overhauled promptly, and' generally the staff met the situation in a very praiseworthy manner The general supply-service for all parts of the town Wn steadily improved, and the Manager does all in his power to meet the requirements of consumers and give them every satisfaction. More and more appliances are being brought into use. and in this connection the Company receives considerable &elp from Mr W. H. Shannon, on whose business premises the Company has Ihe benefit of public show space. TV Gas Cooking Demonstrations were conducted very successfully by Mrs Heinz, end go a way . , in larising the use qf’VoqKers. etc. It is pleasing to dye able, year ,lby year, to appreciate the • loyal services \of tfre staff, who show the greatest interest in the welfare of 'the business, find give every attention to their responsible duties.

The financial results of ; the; year are satisfactory. It has been possible to start reducing the loan pr,oeu'red in connection with the ifew holder and. after making provision for a further reduction; it' is proposal io declare a dividend of four shrillings per £6 share for the half-year; , making six shillings and sixpence in all for the year, as against four shillings and sixpence last year. Tin' payment is recommended for confirmation by the annual meeting. With the Works and • services in good running order, there is every reason- to expect tlie steady progress of tlm Company to be maintained One Director. Dr E. Mr W. Wilson moved that the recommendation regarding the haltyearly dividend ho adopted. This was seconded by Dr Teichelmann and carried.

Tlie Chairman moved tlie re-election of Dr Teichelmann as a director, expressing pleasure that the personnel of tlie directors was being so well maintained. Mr. S. J. Pliciston seconded the motion wltioh was carried.

On the motion, of Dr Teichelmann seconded by Air Williams, .Mr A. ,B. Tying was re-elected, auditor at the usual fee; It was resolved to write Mr King expressing sympathy with bini in his indisposition, and wishing him a speeedy recover’-. Following a discussion on the business of the Company, iii which Mr G. Heinz (Works Manager) and Mr W. H. Shannon, gave interesting information, it was resolved to again inaugurate the cooking demonstrations. It was reported there was a steadily increasing number of cookers, and with tuition available more would be acquired. Before the meeting concluded, the Chairman moved a vote of thunks to the staff.
