A SOUTHLAND. SCHEME.

Considerable interest was taken by those present at the Provincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union to-day in a remit regarding a proposed scheme for, supplying veterinary service for farmers. The remit was as follows ‘‘That this conference recommends to the Board of Agriculture for its fullest consideration a scheme for the provision of mote adequate veterinary service of livestock, owners in New-; Zealand, as outlined by Mr W. Pierson (Gore), and which provides: (1) The appointment of fully qualified veterin* arians in all districts where suffieien support is forthcoming ; (2). their services to be available at a small, fee to all who agree to contribute specified levies; (3) levies to be payable at schedule rates on all livestock by those electing to become members; (4) salaries to he guaranteed up to £lofK* including fees earned; (5) the whole to he controlled by a central hoard.”
The remit was sponsored by Mr D. Dickey, who, after a discussion, replied hat much of the criticism had turno. 1 on the question of the salaries of the ffi'cers. This, he said, was still open to revision, as were the levies on stock. The remit was carried.
