IMPERIAL FRUIT SHOW
A NEW ZEALAND SUCCESS. WELLINGTON, .May 23. A cable lias been received by tiio New Zealand Emit Control ~oard that the first prize in the oversees section (Southern Hemisphere) at tlie imperial Emit Show in London has been awarded to a New Zealand liibit. The prize is Lit), and tin class was open to growers, associations of growers, packing stations, and exporters in Australia New Zealand and South Africa, the exhibit comprising five eases of dessert apples The winning variety was Jonathan, but the grower’s name has not yet been ascertained. There were five entrier from New Zealand, and there wen also several entries from Australia and 'oath Africa.
Another competition in which conadorable interest is being taken, is tin British Empire section, in which prizes of Lot), L2U and LlO are offered in each of the wo classes, on being lor L. cases by an individual grower or -21 by an association or packing station of any dessert apple, and the other t'oi a culinary apple. These prizes are presented by the Empire Marketing Hoard. The-results will not be known until the Canadian fruit has been examined. New Zealand fruit will be examined on arrival, and awarded marks, and such awards to other e.xfnined until the awards to other exhibits have been made. The Imperial
• ruit Show lias now been in existence lor about nine years, and an annua! •'xhibition has been held since IS2I in different cities in England. The show bus always been held in the autumn as being most suitable for fresh uruits grown in Great Britain and Canada, and it has therefore been impassible for Australian, New Zealand and South African growers to participate so far as apples were concerned. The autumn show for the Northern Hemisphere is to be held in October, but it was arranged to bald a spring vfiow for the Southern Hemisphere, of which the result for one section is given above. If the clasess are wei* supported and the experiment proves a success it is highly probable that the spring section will he he considerably enlarged. Growers are urged to enter apart from the prizes to be gained as by doing so they will advertise Dominion fruit during the height of the season in England.
