NANCY CARROLL AND RICHARD AIILEN IN “MANHATTAN COCKTAIL.”
One of Paramount’s first Sound pictures to be released in Australia is “Manhattan Cocktail” starring Nancy Carroll and Richard Arlen. The picture is synchronised throughout with a "'brilliant music score played by a sixtypiece concert orchestra. Another feature of the picture is Nancy Carroll singing two songs, “Another Kiss” and “Gotta Be Good.” “Manhattan Cocktail” is a story set in the theatrical district of New York, and is brimtul of- scintillating scenes as well as pathos and drama. This Paramount Sound picture had its first screening at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, and the New State in Melbourne, where it played to capacity houses. Every scene is perfectly synchronised with appropriate music and sound effects, and Nancy Carroll’s singing of the two songs received vociferous applause. “Mix a beautiful girl with two men—one good, one rich. Add Broadway’s gaieties, heartaches and temptations, and you have a tingling, refreshing ‘Manhattan Cocktail.’ ”
A big -supporting series will also be presented to-night and Tuesday. Prices Circle 2s, stalls Is 6d, children under 12 years (downstairs) 6d. On Wednesday and Thursday next a special 100 per cent, talking, singing and dancing picture “The Great Divide,” starring Dorothy Ma lcail, Jan Keith, Myrna Lov.
LA PARRY PH ONE RECITAL.
At the Soldiers’ Hall on Thursday night, Mr H. T. Parry will give a recital in aid of the furnishing of the new building. The recital will- be supplemented by a number of vocal items, and the whole should provide a very entertaining evening and programme. Admission is fixed at the ■nominal sum of one shilling, children naif price. There will be a number of very fine selections, both vocal and in strumental. Mr Parry has a fine range of records, and these are being ■ added to specially for the occasion. Included in the number will be a' speech by H.R.H: the Prince of Wales on -Sportsmanship, which all votaries of sport should bear. There will : be several variety items, including a skit on broadcasting. The selected orchestral numbers will be the choicest, and introdu e some of the world-fam-ous orchestras. Vocal numbers bv Miss Gladys Moucrieff, McCormack and others, as .well as some plaintive Maori melodies, will give attractive variety to a. programme of unusual excellence. The recital will begin at 8 o’clock. In view of the object of the benefit there should be a very large attendance. 4
