EMPIRE DAY CELEBRATIONS

MR, MACDONALD IN SCOTLAND

RUGSY> May 24. Mr Macdonald accompanied by Miss Ishbel Macdonald to-day flew from, ijondon to S.otlnnd as ordinary passengers in the Imperial Airways liner, City of Glasgow, which is iiuuigitrating a. new experimental week-end service between Croydon and Scottish towns. There were ten other passengers. E’n route a halt was made at Manchester, where the Prime Minister inspected Chatmoss aerodrome.

Mr Macdonald will at 9.30 tomorrow night introduce a special programme issued at all stations of the British Broadcasting Co-operation, commencing, the annual Empire Day celebrations. During the programme listeners will he given an impression in. sound of a journey round the Empire, Visits will be paid to Canada, Australia, Singapore, India and South Africa and ships, trains, ' aeroplanes, wireless and other forms of imperial communiction will be represented. The experimental short wave Empire si,ut, on 0.0. \V. wiii also transmit tne programme.

LONDON, May 25

Empire Day was celebrated in Londone with' special enthusiasm on account of Amy Johnson’s success. Crowds flocked to Hyde Park where community singing was organised. The conductor, Gibson Young, asked the visitors from the Dominion to flourish their programmes and this revealed an astounding number present. The pageant of Empire was followed by a service conducted by Bishop Long. Prince George reviewed between six and seven thousand.naval and military cadets.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY

AUCKLAND, May 25

The Governor-General has despatched the following message to the Queen on the occasion of Her .Majesty’s Birthday:—“The Government and people of this Dominion join with me in tendering to Your Majesty respectful congratulations and good wishes on the occasion of Your Majesty’s birthday.”
