Altogether, 12 fra.ns weie required to bring it from Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch. The week's figures should also constitute a iceord, .or .so far 13,069 tons have been hauled through. The main reason for the huge tonnage is that 10 steamers are bar-bound at Greymouth, and the freight is being diverted to the railways. ■*£ ' Canterbury’s example in organising a party of business men and farmers to visit thd Franz Josef a.nd Fox Glaciers is being followed by Otago, where Mr C. E. Barnes, Railway Business 1 Agent, has issued an invitation 'to citizens to participate in a trip to , South Westland next month.,, He hopes to receive at least ICO applications. The party will leave Dunedin on June 16th, and will make the journey from Christchurch to Hokitika on the following day. The glaciers will lie visited on the 18th, and 19th. and 20th. -and a day will be spent' at Hokitika or Greymouth <4 the return journey. The party will reach Christchurch from the West Const on June 23r rl , and will return to Dunedin on the following cay. There was a considerable amount of barracking by supporters of the two teams on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon, strong partisanship being voiced as the game progressed towards a conclusion. Feeling apparently got the better of the sporting proclivities of som.e of the spectators, and a number of unwarranted remarks were voiced by one or two so- | called “snorts,” much to the disgust of most of the other spectators lined along the field. It maj 7 be mentioned that the referee, though very strict, was absolutely fair and impartial, and lie had a + all times a full command of the play, his decisions being remarkably prompt, and very few points were missed. On Saturday evening the new premises for the Bristol Coy. in Revell Street, were in occupation, and the uuilding now fronting Weld Street on a corner long unused, wa,s a very striking feature, being well lit, with an attractive display in the roomy frontage avilable, and which has been made the most of. There are two show windows, with a well front and lead lights and coloured glass are a very attractive feature of the new style of front, There is a commodious sales shop within, where there is a good display of music arc! instruments. The premises are exceedingly well lit with hidden lights and all glare is avoided. At the rear, in addition to cosy office quarters, there is .also a sound-proof gramophone cabinet for trying out records, and a workshop for repairs. The whole forms a very convenient and attractive business premises. After business hours bn Saturday night, several folk gathered and congratuated Mr and Mrs Spencer Brown on their enterprise in erecting the premises, and Mr R. A. Horne, representing the Bristol Piano Coy. on securing so fine a stand as a permanent location for the Hokitika branch. Messrs D. J. jEvans and W. Jeffries both spoke iiv' complimentary terms of the enterprise shown and wished the business success. Dr Teiehelmann proposed tne health of the ladies present. Mr W. Keller also spoke, and Mr S. Brown proposed the toast the builders, who were congratulated on their good work. Messrs Duncan Bros and Mr Hausmann responded. Messrs Horne and Brown acknowledged the compliments naid, and thanked the • friends for their presence and good wishes.'
