JAP OIL SUPPLY
FROM CHINESE SHALE

TOKIO, May 22,
The Nanking Nationalist Government of China has formally protested against the exploitation of the shale deposits in connection with the Fuschun Colliery, which is operated by the South Manchurian Railway (a Japanese concern). The Nationalist Government claims the extraction ■of the oil is an infringement of Chinese sovereignty. It has demanded an immediate cessation.
The Japanese claim the rights ainseperable from the byproducts of the coal riiine, and that immense sum' have been invested in the development of works which are now approaching a- paying basis, and will benefit the Japanese Navy to which oil is a vital necessity.
