Greater interest might well have been shown in the public meeting on Thursday night relative to the campaign being initiated locally to raise funds to tight the scourge of cancer. It is proposed to inaugurate a special research 'clinic for the Dominion, and the medical profession is very unanimous about the necessity for the undertaking, Cancer is a known disease for long years, and a great deal has been accomplished, though as has been said not in a sensational or specta-uJar way, In the main there has been great reliance on surgery, but later the radium treatment has found favour. Still, a complete cure of the fell disease is still wanting. The unanimity of the medical profession on this subject, in itself impresses as to the great importance to humanity of this campaign. An enemy is without, a deadly enemy which is accounting for a great deal of life, and for enormous suffering. To alleviate the pain, and to fight the
"isen.se to a finality, there is a call on the public at large to co-operate in raising funds to provide the means for a sustained policy of critical research and closer investigation of all cases coming into the hands of the doctors The disease has such ramifications that the complaint is now far too rife. The problem is a great one, but those responsible are not without hope of achieving success. That attitude should, encourage all who can to help in providing the funds for the essential work ahead. A very notable response to tne appeal is being made throughout the Dominion, and this district is, not likely to be behind-hand in the noble task to he done. It is an impressive fact for the laymen that the experts' are so united in their appeal. There is an onus placed on the public, and the resnonse must needs he adequate if scientific results worthy, of the great work proposed, are to he achieved. The appeal to the good folk of Westland, we are persuaded, will not be in vain, and the district may be expected with evorv confidence to do what, is required of it cheerfully and creditably.
