Written tenders will be received up till neon on Saturday the 24th. inst for the purchase of a crop of turnips approximately one acre at the State Forest Nursery at Woodstock. Youth will have its fling at the Soldiers’ Hall to-night when there will be a juvenile dance commencing at £ o'clock to which juveniles will be ad mitted for one shilling, and adults 2s. The proceeds will go to the building fund. To-night there will be a juvenile dance at the Soldiers’ Hall. Door,' will open at 7.30, and dancing will commence at 7.40 o’clock. _ Supper for the juveniles will be served from 9.30. and .or the adults from 10 o’clock. The noor is in excellent order and spe.ial music will be provided by La l’arrj vpnone. The Bristol Piano Coy. Ltd. are preparing to remove to their new premises alongside the H.B. Clothing Factory where a commodious up-to-date shop has been almost completed. The new premises will enable the firm to make a very attractive display to which reference will be made at a later date. Preparations for the opening of opossum season in Westland on June 2nd. are proceeding apace. There arei a number of applications in for areas in the district, lodged with both the Lands and Forestry Departments. The season extends over two months. Some important alterations have been made to the regulations for this season, Now that ,the Soldiers’ Hall has been successfully opened’ and the new additions have proved so successful and make such a fine addition to the comfort of natrons, the annual social dance of the Hokitika Bowline Club will prove even more attractive than ever, This popular function is sot down as usual for the night of the King’s birthday, and on Tuesday week should attract a very large attendance. The Black Hand Orchestra will supply the music. Mr Mills of Hansford, Mills Ltd. of Wellington, builders and contractors, | is here at present in connection with the building of the new steel hull for Ibe Hi mu plat gold dredge. Hansford, Mills Ltd. are the contractors for this large work, and time is the essence of the contract, the work having to be carried out as quickly as possible. As a consequent e a large number of men will be employed in order to complete uhe work within the allotted time. The* Kanieri Electric rjtd. is also letting a large.- excavation contract for the new power supply line at Ivanieri Forks to a Ciirisichurch firm, and this work will also call for considerable labour- to complete within the specified time. The survey for the new road to com plete the route to Dorothy waterfall at Lake Kanieri is now completed, and camps for the workmen to he employed on the road are now being fixed. There will be a considerable number of men employed, and these will be under a foreman who will reside at Hans Bay in the tourist' hut. Local men who have sent in their names are likely to be started very soon, and some additional men may be sent here from outside, It is understood the new road will bo pushed through by a- shorter route than the existing track round the lakeside, and that a very pretty drive will result when the road is finished. The death occurred- last evening of one of Greymouth’S; oldest and most jsteemed residents in the. person of Mrs Jessie Hambleton,., who passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs F. Harley, Cowper Street. The deceased, who was, a native of Scotland, had attained the advanced age >V'Bb year.s, and had resided in Greymouth for a very' long period, being very highly respec l ed by all who knew her. She was predeceased in 1903 by\ her husband, the late 1 Joseph Hamble- i ton, manager of the Despatch Foundry, Greymouth. She leaves a family ofj three daughters and three sons, the former being Mrs Piteous ‘'Wellington'), Mrs F. Harley (Greymouth), and Miss J. Hambleton (Greymoufh); while , the sons are Messrs ,Percv Hftmbleton (manager of the Dispatch Foundry), and Harry and Jack TThmbleton (alsa of the Dispatch Foundry).
