To-dav, Naval Staff Lieut. Commander Ivusakari suicided to mark disapproval of Japan’s alleged failure at the London Conference. Meanwhile Admiral Takarahe is endeavouring to reconcile Admiral Kato and other naval diehards avlio are antagonistic to the pact.

NEWFOUNDLAND’S FIRST LADY ALP.

ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland), Alay 19. In the Lewis Porte Legislative byeelection, Lady Squires, the wife of the Premier, was elected by a large majority. She is the first woman to be elected since the passing of the Franchise Act in 1924.

Britain’s defence of amateur sport triumphed at a meeting of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, when a Finnish and Swedish motion seeking to establish .the principle from broken time payment was rejected by : eighteen votes to four. Barnard, -on behalf of Britain,-said lie would withdraw from the Federation if the proposals were carried, Sport must ho conducted for sports sake, not allowing payment for any Olympic member or international competitor for loss of time and wages.
