WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

MONDAY MAY 19.

The Board met at 8 p.m. Present:Messrs ' J; J. Breeze (Chairman), G. Davidson, R. Meharry, W. Jeffries, YV. Evenden, H. Wells, T.. Duff and A. R. Elcock.

An apology was made for the absence of Mr Keenan.

The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE

From Hon W. Taverner, Minister ol Railways, notifying it had been decided to cancel the present lease of portion of railway reserve, and to issue a new lease to the Board at 10s per annum.—Received, and a vote of thanks passed for action taken. It was stated the Board desired to use the land for dairying purposes for the hospital only, and that the Department be askecl to supply condemned sleepers for posts'for fencing purposes'. From C. S. Allen, Wellington, promising assistance in obtaining particulars' and categories asked for.—Received'. The Secretary reported the information had come to hand. From Hospital Department forwarding copies f oP letters received.—[Received. . .

From various, circulars aiid covering letters. —Received. Air Davidson reported that Di Fletcher Telford had forwarded a number of choice carnations and a sackful of daffodil bulbs. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dr Telford for his gift.

From W. Evenden, Kurnara, forwarding contributions to the Friendly Societies’ fund.—ll ecei ved, Mr Duff moved the usual formal motion to authorise the Hoard-borrowing an overdraft up to £looo.—Seconded by Mr Davidson and carried. From Dr Bell, reporting he was in Christchurch on sick leave.—Received.

REPORTS

From Surgeon Superintendent Westland Hospital reporting patients in hospital'op Ist. April totalled 35. Admitted during April. 10 males, 11 females. Total treated, 37 males. 25 fe-males—-02. Discharged cured. 17 males l 1 fcTl?? 1 . Died, 3 males. Total discharged : 20 males. It femJjs—3l. Remaining 'in hospital. 30th. April. 17 males. 14 females—3l. Tn hospital for two months, 11 males, 7 females—18. Received.

Front Matron Strongman reporting Nurse'Stone had completed four years of service'and terminates at the end of May; stating nurses on leave and matters affecting house staff; acknowledging gift, of three eases of apples from-Cant.- Laughton, a.nd Mr P. Jones.—Received, and votes of thanks passed to donors. Accounts amounting to £372 Ills 2d were passed for payment,

The Treasurer reported receipts £204 9s' Od, payments £BBS 14s sd, debit balance £373 17s 3d.—-Received. The next meeting was fixed for June 16 th.

TIMBER,' WORKERS 1 FEES

The Secretary reported tliat the timber workers’ fees for maintenance lor the year ended 31st. Dec. 1979 were £1072 Is 0-1. 'The fees paid by the limber Workers’ U’nioii totalled £397, the proportion of 37.03 per cent. Mr Jeffries said he was of opinion that the bargain made between the" Board and Timber Workers’ Union ,vas all in favour of the timber workers. The Board was very much.disappointed at the action of the Timber Workers in their delay in malting their payments to the Board, who are struggling under an overdraft. He mentioned that the payments for the quarter ended 31st. March had not yet been paid up.

Air Davidson said he endorsed the remarks of Air Jeff lies. lie thought when the agreement came up for revision the Board should demand fifty per cent, of the fees, and that more prompt paymenjt of those fees he paid.

Air Duff said he was one who had taken part in the Conference, and he bad thought a. larger average would have been paid than bad resulted. He thought when tne agreement came up for revision a larger amount should be asked for. He also thought there should ho payment made direct to the Board from the Timber Workers’ Union.

Air" Evenden agreed with the remarks of the previous speakers, and thought the Board should ask for a larger percentage. Air Jeffries moved that a telegram ne sent to the President of the Timber Workers’ Union, notifying they are in default of the last quarter’s payment, and asking for immediate romittam-o and failing same the agreement be terminated. Seconded by Air AlehaYry and carried.

CANCER RESEARCH APPEAL

The Chairman moved that the Board vote £lO 10s to tlnS*”"fund.—Seconded by Air Duff and carried. The Board rose at 9.30 p.m.
