SPECTACULAR FIRE
LARGE RESIDENCE BURNT. PALMERSTON N., May If). One of the oldest and largest homes in the vicinity of Palmerston North was destroyed by fire late this afternoon, when a twenv-two-roomed residence, lately occupied by Air AY. I. Lovelock, at Awapuni, "'as razed to the ground. The'bouse was unoccupi d c,t the time, as Air Lovelock had lately exchanged with Mr A. C. \finely, of Gisborne, who had not taken possession. An elderly caretaker named Green was in charge, but he was also absent. # Tlie fire is believed to have started in the office, and, fanned by a breeze, spread r’pidly. The Palmerston North Eire Brigade wart powerless to assistas the house is outside the borough houndary.
Fortunately, all the furniture had boon removed, with the exception of a ’-’Hard ..table and two valuable pictures belonging tw MV Lovelock.
Although no definite figures are available, it is believed that the insurance on the building is in the vicinity o-f C3OOO.
The house was situated in fine grounds, and surrounded by large trees, some of which caught alight. The '•ountry was lit up for a considerable disLniep round by tlie glare, which was plainly visible in town.
