CORRESPONDENCE.
PETERSEN ROAD MATTERS. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Tlit general public may be interested to kno.v that the question c-f Petersen ’s' Road extension is still a burning one in this district. For .some time rumours have been current that Air Mclntosh and his I friends were renewing their attack. | This has been borne out by ibo report in the “Guardian”*' of the last, County Cor.ncil meeting when the KumaraKapitea and Petersen’s I’oads were discussed. Councillor Jeffries said the - two works were too, much lor the Council in 0110 year. *llO considered that the Kumara-Kapitea should be done first and after discussion' in whi -li it w.vs stated that as there vas again discussion as to the route of Petersen’s Road it would be advisable to defer taking any action there Interviewed at Harihari ' yesterday Councillor Jeffries explained that . Ids attitude was decided by information s.'ipd'd by the County Clerk to the effect that Mr Wall had altered Ids -opinion and was willing to cotisb/iw to tho road lming made off the original surveyed route. Air Wall vas present at the interview and promptly denied giving his consent iit writing or by word of mouth to anyone, end s-.’id it was ridiculous to talk about a detour now when the surveyed route was closed and a bridge erected, over a creek, in all costing £290 or more Councillor Jeffries immediately said he would reopen 'the question at next meeting and take steps 1c put matters right providing Mr Wall wrote to the Council - ind corrected the impression given -by the Clerk. v '
1 have also received a letter from r o'M!ci!ior Donovan who states' 4hat “wo were told distinctly that the survey was being- done because , tho settlers had altered their mind'/ On further investigation we . find Public Works surveyors haye, spent some days making out a detour and tlie general query is who authorised this survey aild who is going to pay for it. .
I hope the foregoing : nforma.fion will enlighten the public in..; general and the Councillors in particular, I am, etc., . J. J. McKAY, President Harihari Branch; New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Harihari, May 17, 1930.
