ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY

Mrs Riildock, an inmate of Talboy’s Home, celebrated her hundredth birthday yesterday. The old lady received congratulations and a telegram from Sir Joseph War-a. The Mayor , and -Mayoress were present at the celebratory luuctftm. She distinctly recalls tiie accession of Queen Victoria.

CAR ACCIDENTS

HAWERA, May 19

A grocer’s delivery van was badly smashed at High Street, Hawera, level crossing on Saturday evening, in a collision with an incoming slow train from the south. The driver escaped injury. A second accident, arising out of the first, occurred at the same spot shortly afterwards when a car comingi out of a side street, collided with a stationary car -parked close to the scene of the first accident. The moving car overturned but three occupants escaped injury.

RESIDENCE BURNED

ELTHAM, May 19. A two storeyed residence of twelve rooms in Eltharn was extensively damaged at five o’clock this morning. The fire hud a strong hold, when the brigade was summoned,, but a good save was effected. Apparently it originated from A spark 1 in an open fire place. The o-nly occupant, S. Pratt, was awakened by a noise and escaped in his night attire. The house was erected twenty-seven years ago and was originally the home of \Y . H. Me Garry, now* of Auckland, For a long time it was used as a boarding house known as “The Gables.” The owner is W. Cliristoffer, of New Plymouth. The insurances are £1250 on the building. Pratt had no :n----suranee on the furniture.

ALLEGED THEFT

CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. Charged his morning that on May Bth they broke and entered a shop in Linwood Avenue and stole goods, and alleged to be concerned in shop burglaries at Fendalton and elsewhere, three youth aged 17 whose names were suppressed were remanded till May 27tli. The police stated 15 other charges are to be gone into.

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT,

DUNEDIN, May 19

Hon. Taverner who left for Wellington to-day, said Cabinet had approved of the necessary expenditure for tree planting on an area of about 6000 acres in Pebbly Hills district, to relieve unemployment.

The Minister is also in communication with the 'Qity Council with the object of the State Forests service undertaking'with the Council, a scheme in the vicinity of the city for married men ai.d unemployed with dependants.

Two showmen, Christopher Howe Nicholson, and John Brooks, who had a stand at the Winter Show, were brought before the Court on a charge of being rogues and vagabonds and betting on the Show premises. Evidence was to the effect that Brooks scouted For likely patrons of a game in which money was offered if two out of three balls were put through a hole. Two country visitors, were invited to try. The first time they lost one pound each. Brooks then tried and won. The men were again induced to try, £25 for £5 being offered if the players were successful. Again they lost, and the players became suspicious, when the showman demanded cash instead of a cheque.

The police were informed and the men arrested. The police stated it was impossible for uninitiated to v.in. The Magistrate fined Nicholson £3O and Brooks £2O and threatened them with imprisonment next time.

Misses E. Gunn and Cleaver, girl ushers at the Civic Theatre, pluckily attempted to hold a youth found in the dressing room on Saturday night. First Gunn, and then Cleaves grasped him, but lie struggled free, and fled towards the circle where he was caught by an attendant.
