A dramatic epic of the air and the sea was recounted to-day when an inter-island steamer arrived with the survivors of a. sensational aerial accident that occurred during military arid naval air manoeuvres. It resulted in the drownin' 1- of a non-commis-sioned officer and the loss of four aeroplanes. - ’ . •Forty-six machines participated in m,. ‘xureises. While Hying between Oahumaui and Hawaii, an air etrps sergeant and three other members of his plant’s crew attempted in parachutes to leave a disabled bombing prime when it was four thousand feet in the air, but the shrouds of the sergeant’s parachute became entangled in' the plane’s rigging, taking him with it to the bottom of the sea.
A convoy of planes then settled on huge seas that were running, in an effort to save the other three survivors, which was successful. Rescue vessels later picked up the occupants of the convoy machines, which, after rescuing the bombers’ crew, had drifted helplessly for many hours.
