WELLINGTON, May 15.

Alteration in the dates of the summer vacations lor schools along the lines, suggested by Sir Thomas SuTey received the support of the Technical School teachers at their conlcieiice today. A remit in connection with this had been sent forward by the Dunedin branch as follows: —“That the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association support Sir Thomas Skley’s suggestion that the question ol altering the dates of the summer vacation be considered.” It was carried on a division by 26 votes to 23.

Containing a statement to the effect that more than half of the children of New' Zealand 'between the ages of 14 and 18 years were receiving no direct education , whatever, a remit considered, to-day by tbe Technical School Teachers’ Association led to a certain amount of discussion. The remit, wdiich proposed recreational and cultural courses in evening schools, as a remedy, was carried: The remit was introduced by Mr W. Harris, of Christchurch, and was as follow's: ■ “That in the light of the fact that 51.2 per cent, of adolescent New Zealanders between the ages of 14 and 18 are receiving no direct education, the Education Department sliou.ld encourage the development of more recreational and cultural courses in the evening schools.” ~

TEACHERS’. SALARY DEMAND

WELLINGTON, May 15

Dissatisfaction with salaries at present paid to senior headmasters, .was expressed at. the annual meeting of the Primary' Seliqol Headmasters’ ’ Association to-day. It was. mentioned that many headmasters reached the maximum before the completion of thirty years’ service, and in the remaining ten years or more had no hope of advancement. The disparity between primary and secondary salaries was also the subject of considerable discussion. Officers were elected as follows President, Mr L. F. de Berry (Dunedin); Vice-Presidents, Messrs W. A. Swinliourn (Palmerston North) and W. F,. Abel. (Dunedin); Advisory Members of the Executive, Messrs H. F. Pehlingtoji' (Christchurch) and Ik W. Moore (Palmerston North). .
