Last evening listeners-in to the Christchurch broadcast service heard Miss Joy Ward give a short recital during the Children’s Hour. The recital came through clearly and was enjoyed by those who were fortunate in hearing the young lady. , ■

Primitive methods of bookkeeping reminiscent of Robinson Crusbe’s ingenuity, were revealed during the hearing of a Supreme Court case at.Palmer* Hon North. A witness stated that he checked delivery of loads of metal by cutting notches in. a stick. At night, he counted the notches and entered the total in his tally-hook.

Two spikes driven in between the joints of rails were found by ganger* on the railway line between Mahia sta tion and the bridge over the Takanini stream south of Manurewa on’ Monday morning. The spikes ; ,which were about 5 inches long, arid were of the type used for fastening rails to sleepers, were lying flat between: the rails. When they were found they were both on one side of the line, being the length. of one rail apart. The discovery was made by gangers who were proceeding to their work on the construction of the duplicate line. At this spot the line,, which is perferctly straight, passes over r • itrh filling, and it was in the centre of the embankment that the line was intreferred with.
