N.Z. UNEMPLOYED

3,500 REGISTERED. 1 1 I wlegmpti — Assu , Copyright ROTORUA, May 14. The question Of unemployment received further consideration by the Cabinet at its meeting here to-uay. Following on the discussion, the prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, stated that the total number of men registered at the Bureaux as fit for heavy work were, according to latest returns, 3502 ; which total, less those who either have refused, or have left. Government works on their own accord since the first of January numbering 548, leaves a net total of 2954. The Public Works Department, he said, had already arranged for the employment of GOG men, and with a view to affording further measures of relief the Government had decided to make provision for an additional ’ “00 men in various districts of the dominion to be employed in public works and on afforestation. There were also several other schemes under consideration. It would be seen therefore, that the total olf those who i were at present unfortunately out of | work would be materially reduced at an early date. “The matter of dealing with the difficult question of unemployment,” .concluded Sir Joseph Ward, “will continue to receive the closest attention of the Government with the object of providing as much work as possible before the winter comes on. I might also say that one of the private Afforestation Companies in the Dominion has recently acquired a substantial area of land in the Rotorua district.” Tt was their intention he said, to employ a large number of men in the planting operations as soon as possible. FURTHER SESSIONS. ROTORUA, May 14. Cabinet will continue its deliberations to-night and to morrow.
