FRENCH DENUNCIAT 1,-ON
[United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.]
* ’ PARIS, May 12.
There ris a remarkable denunciation of’English sport in the “Journal des Pebates,” .It is the.,outcome of the Teceiif Rugby death.
The “Journal des Debates” .declaresr “If this game of savages is banished from civilised countries, the death of „th&.* victim will notybe in;; vain. - EngT lish fathers, clergymen, and heads of institutions, have ;rprotested.-»for years against this so-called sport, which is merely brutality.” The Journal asks how, in view of the fact that the English newspapers used to publish the Rugby death roll, the game was ever allowed in France. The paper continues: “It is not generally known in France that the so-called popular sports in England are no longer anything but spectacles, like cinema and. other commercial enterprises. The only unprofessional sports in England are fox hunting and yachting'. .Both, To'othall and cricket are played by professionals, all of whom gain enormous profits. It does not matter whether the players are killed or maimed, so long as there are big profits.”
