“RULE BRITANNIA”

. LONDON, May 13. “Rule Britannia” is out of date, declared the Mayor of Horrogate, Aldennann Aunukin, who is the father-in-law of the'Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt. Hon. Philip Snowden, when lie was asked to participate in an Empire Day gathering. He remarked: “1 will not. appear at any gathering where ‘Rule Britannia’ is sung. I must sec the programme of songs before I attend.”

The newspaper proprietors association has sent a letter to Mr MacDonald regretting the Government’s use of the Official, Secrets Act against newspapers publishing the decision to arrest Gandhi, expressing the opinion that a interrogation of, the journalist concerned who had been engaged in the collection of information by legitimate methods, had been an unjustifiable infraction of the freedom of the press and . urging an amendment of the sections-of the -Act, relating to civil affairs.

They forced an entrance to the University hall and tore down and tossed into the street a- painting of King, Alfonso. There were cries of long live the'Republic. Afterwards the students stoned the home of Jesuit priests.
