WESTLAND COMPETITIONS

MONDAY RESULTS

Tho Competitions were continued throughout yesterday at high pressure. From 9.30 in the morning to ,11.30 last night, with short luncheon and afternoon adjournments, the programme vent on, and. all deserve credit for the celerity with which thfe events were disposed of. There was a fair attendance at the forenoon session, a good atendance at ' the afternoon, and a crowded attendance at night, when the dress circle was filled and the floor space almost so A particularly well varied programme was disposed of during the very full day, and there was great variety in the entertainment provided. The audicncj3 was (an appreciative one, and all the competitors had a most ffrien'dly reception. The evening programme proved particularly popular. There were several visiting elocutionists 'from Greymouth, and many very fine Shakesperean items were rendered. The work touched ? very high point. Indeed, the whole standard of the Competitions has been elevated yet again. Year by year the work is improving, and tho advance this year is being freely Com mented upon. This praise refers to nil branches of the Competitions including the vocal and musical branches which show a great all round advance, The Judges in their comment praised much of the work very highly, and the Society must, hav© great satisfaction in the knowledge chat its efforts are being availed of to such good effect.

The judge praised this item, specially mentioning the outstanding merit' of the winner. ' •• ■

EVENING PROGRAMME

Classic dance ensemble, 10 to 14 years—Miss Nancy Wright’s pupils, 65 Duet in Character, 13 to 16 years, own selection-—Misses Gladys and Alice Radcliffe, 90. The Judge groat- M ly praised the daintiness of. the presentation of the duet, “Rendezvous. Piano Solo (senior test). : “Arabesque”—Miss Monica Knowles 88 Miss Leslie Marshall and Miss Gwen Jacobs each 85 ; Miss Elsie Robinson giQ. The excellence pf the playing was praised very highly “by Mr Lilly. Musical Monologue (seniors), o-vn selection, Final-Mr T. Learmont 89. Miss M. Hannan. 88, Mr P. J. McGrath 86. National Song (seniors), own selection Final— Mrs Turnbull 90, Miss Rita Morgan 89, Mr E. Boote 88. The Judge gave an interesting criticism of the work all of which was praised. Recitation, 7 to 9, “The Penguin and the Whale,” . Final—Alexis Campbell 84, Ida McDonald 83, Detr.y Brown 81, Mary Nielsen, highly commended. This was a delightful class and the audience enjoyed the competitors work greatly. Recitation (men), own selection— Mr T. Learmont 87 , Mr W. McGrath 86, Mr J. Stopforth 79, Mr P. J. McGrath 78. This was a splendid section, mostly Shakesperean items, and was commented on very highly by Mr Ginger in his comment. Sacred Solo (own selection), FinalMiss R. Morgan 87,' Miss E. Knight 85, Mr E. Boote 84, Mrs Turnbull §2' Mrs R. Eindlay 81. This section found special favour with the audience. Impromptu Debate, “Should Husbands assist with the household duties”—Messrs W. D. Murray and J. Booth 1, Messrs A. Carroll and W. P. McCarthy 2. Vioiin iPplo, (own selection)--Mr Chas. lieach 82 Mr Jack Ackers 80, Mr P. Crough 76. The soloists had a good reception throughout, and the work was praised highly by the Judge. . . Shakesperean Recitation, (test tor menl. Seddon Cup, subject “Othello,” Act Y, Scene 2.—Mr W. McGrath 80, Mr J Stopforth 77*, Mr T. Learmont 73. Five competed and a -very fine rendition was given of this difficult number. . Tenor Solo (own selection!--Mr Evelyn Boote 85, Mr T. Hatch 72. Now Zealand Author (senior section), own selection, Final- -Miss Hazel Perrv 85, Miss M. Hannan 84, Mr J. Stopforth 80. This section has well justified its choice. TO-DAY AND TO-NIGHT.

The Compeitions continued to-day and to-night ' with full programmes, and finish to-morrow forenoon. Tomorrow and Thursday night there will be demonstration .concerts, seats for which are now being booked up rapidly.

TO-NIGHT’S PROGRAMME.

• To-night’s programme should be one of the best. It will include the finalising of several of the recall numbers. In the elocution work there will be several sections, including the junior and senior classes for the New Zealand author. On the musical side there will be the test for the soprano solo, the ladies’ solo (recalls) for Mr ..moss’s trophy, and the humorous solo, as well as vocal duets and quartettes, and songs in character. As heretofore the entertainment will begin at 7.30 o’clock.

The final session of the Competition takes place to-morrow forenoon. It will he a very full session, there beingl over thirty items to dispose of. To-morrow evening the first demonstration concert' takes place, compiencing at 7.30 o’clock, ' and followed on Thursday evening with the second demonstration. . concert whetj* there will be a- complete change of programme. Seats 'are booking rapidly for 'both concerts.
