MUD ERUPTION

GREAT BLOW-OUT,

(By Telegraph—Press Association)

GISBORNE; May 7

A sharp report and rumblings suggestive of an earthquake startled Waimata Valley residents yesterday. Later it was found that 3 to 4 acres round the mud springs on -Savage’s property were covered to a depth of 10 feet wit limud, by an eruption through a gas blow-out. It is estimated that nearly a million tons of mud were thrown up, the eruption overflowing a quarter of a mile- down, the hillside. The spring always interested oil men as the presence of gas was believed to be associated with the existence of oil.
