CORRESPONDENCE.
IX SYMPATHY
(To the Editor.)
Sir—l would like to thank “SiTverLining” for his contribution, both to your columns and to the Howat fund, and to assure him that many others are. thinking and acting in the same spirit as he has done in connection with this matter. Though no public, or general appeal has been made, I received the other day, for this purpose, from less than a dozen persons about £3O, and last night two working men c-aine to the door with os eafch. Wes I Coasters know lio.v to deal with sue 1 cases. When the facts were made known, Mr Radford, of the Dredge Coy. set things going, and Mr Howat’s workmates are responding handsomely to the appeal. Constable Drummond, at Kanieri, and Mr W. Rutland, at Hokitika, are both doing something, and in a few days a substantial amount will be forthcoming to lighten the load of misfortune that fell so suddenly upon the worthy young people, and the ready and practical sympathy expressed for them will not only help them now, but will be for them a fragrant memory in the time to come.
I ain etc., •T. W. HAYWARD Hokitika, Afar 7th. 1930.
