ANGLO-EGYFTIAN CONFERENCE

Both to-day’s sessions of the. AngjoEgyptian Conference have been occupied by Egypt’s drawing contract circles around tbe Soudan problem, they have given the impression they .are trying to see how far they can stretch Britain's limit of concession, before smashing the conference. Several times during the course of the morning sitting the-parties separated, while the Egyptians deliberated upon some new point, none of which brought the discussions nearer finality. The conference will resume this afternoon.

There is still little sign of a solution To-morrow will be a vital day.

David Jones, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, addressed the committee of the Empire Parliamentary Association, of which Mr Lunn is chairman, on the subject of Empire Marketing and the work of the New Zealand Meat' Board.

ARCHBISHOP'S LETTER

CONDEMNS NEWSPAPERS

MALTA, May 6

The Archbishop has issued a circular declaring, for reasons known to anybody with a sparky of Christian sentiment. He condemns the neAvspaper “Malta Chronicle,” and “Ixvenix” (meaning the sun), which is General Strickland’s paper, and prohibits, under penalty of mortal sin, their reading or sale. If they continue publication in the same tenor he will inflict a canonical penalty, on the proprietors and the editors and associates.

Negotiations with the Egyptian delegation were continued this evening at the Foreign Office, and after a lengthy discussion, which was concerned with the Sudan, the meeting was adjourned

until 8 o’clock to-morrow morning. This early hour lias been fixed in view of the short time that remains for negotiations, before Mr A. Henderson (Foreign Secretary) leaves on Thursday for Geneva to attend the League of Nations Council.
