There was a pitched battle in the streets of Brisbane to-day. It ended in the arrest of several of the unemployed. During the clashes, the police made many batons charges, ■ while Roots and fists were used by the i ioters. The occasion was the - Labour Day procession. The unemployed formed themselves into a separate camp, and they became disorderly. They carried offensive banners and shouted: “Kill the bosses’ army!” Their leaders also delivered fiery addresses in the vicinity of the Trades Hall.
The police tried to dispense them, and the melee ensued. Reinforcements of police arrived, and they arrested a, number amid hootijig and jeering. Nobody was seriously hurt.
