HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONDAY, MAY sth. Tlio Committee met at 7 p.m. Present: Messrs A. 0. Armstrong (Chairman), Richards, Shannon, Sweney, Breeze, Pedder, Chesterman, Conning and Mrs J. H. Wilson. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. RECTOR WELCOMED.

The Chairman' extended a hearty welcome to the new Rector Mr J. L. Menzies, who was present. The Chairman assured Mr Menzies that he would have the hearty support of members. He wished him every success .in his work, and felt sure that tho. excellent reputation that had preceded him would be fully borne out. Members generally joined in extending a welcome, extending the warmest ,of good wishes for 'a pleasant an.d successful term of office. Mr Menzies thanked the Chairman and members for the-very warm welcome extended, which he deeply appreciated. He was quite prepared to work hard to follow in the footsteps of the'late Rector, Mr Partridge. He was sure he would have the hearty and warm support of the members of the Committee, and when he moved on ultimately after his term, be it long or short, he hoped he would have earned their approbation. He had started off that day with the term examination and he was quite impressed with the. work of the scholars and the staff as far as he had been able to .judge was very satisfactory. He was glad to hear that the Committee and. people of the town took a keen interest in the welfare of the school and that would prove of great advantage to the teachers and scholars alike. It gave him great pleasure to be present that night as Rector and if he failed in any yespect it would pot he, due fo any lack of effort on ’ his, part.,,He again thanked them for/their very kind welcome. , • .\ ' 1 inward correspondence. From Dental Nurse (Miss Maloney) notifying 295 operations and 185 attendances, Hokitika and Arajiura scholars being treated.—Received. The Chairman, reported having interviewed the Dental Nurse in regard to laundry work. He moved that in view of the arrears of work that application! be made ,for an assistant nurse to enable arrears of work, to be overtaken. Seconded by Mr Richards and carried, "

From Canterbury School Committees Association, in reference to 'Education Commission’s report, and -forwarding views of the Association for consideration by householders and commjittees,—Received, The remits were discussed and various opinions agreed to for forwarding on to the Committee.

The Chairman and Air Conning were reappointed a visiting committee for the month. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. Air Richards reported that the newly formed pipe band had held its first practice, that Air C. Gibbons had given great assistance in testing the instruments. —Received.

The Chairman reported the cost of the fifes was 25s each and it ,< was proposed that each scholar . should find; 12s 6d- which would be refunded when the instrument was returned in good order, or it could be purchased outright for 255. Mr Sweney moved the action of Mr (Richards and the Chairman be approved. Seconded by Mr Shannon and carried. The Committee rose at 8 p.m.
