NEW YORK, May 4.
A total of 1028, prominent economists who are . members of the American Economic Association, and representatives of 179 colleges in 46 States have issued a statement urgin’g Con-
gress to reject thenmcreased tariffs or asking President Hopyjr. to veto them if Congress passes Tariff Bill. They state: “We are convinced that mcreased restrictive-duties- are a mistake- They would ;I gperate generally to increase prices,,-,-thereby encouraging concerns with the, higher costs to undertake productip/r, thus compelling the consumer to subsidise waste and inefficiency in industry,” It is also stated that the far,piers- would suffer doubly, and that* the export trade in general would suffer* ;:o They said that American manufnctuyera.ydid not need higher tariffs. Few,:.could,hope to gain from such a charge.;:-
