At a meeting of the Chrysanthemum Show Committee last evening, two special prizes were offered in the cooking section, 10s 6d from the Hokitika Gas Coy for the best sponge sandwich cooked in a gas range, and the other special, 10s 6d from the Westland Power Coy Ltd. for the best sponge sandwich cooked in an electric rangp. Already a ladies ..kand-'bag has been donated for the best sponge sandwich open class,.-- . With these three prizes it H expected large entries will be forthcoming.
With respect to the goodwill tour of the Canterbury excursionists due here on Monday week, it is proposed to entertain the visitors that evening at a public gathering whereat there will oe an opportunity to discuss general business mattcirs. It is hoped also when the party return from the south to specially entertain them at a social --notion. No doubt the citizens generally will co-operate in giving the visitors a pleasant tune. The co-opera-tion, of the country settlers in the matter would be appreciated also.
Particulars of the various sessions at the Competitions appear in this issue. It will be seen that the forthcoming festival promises to be a record from every point of view. The ordinary price of admission will be Is to the day sessions, and 2s and Is to the evening sessions. Subscribers and family season tickets are issued at specially low rates, covering the full season, excepting the demonstration concerts, for which a special tariff is charged. Holders of subscribers £1 tickets have priority of booking at the demonstration concerts next Thursday and Friday ; and priority of booking for family season ticket holders will be next Saturday and the following Monday, after which the box plan will be open to the public. The charge for seats for the demonstration concert will be 2s to the subscribing and season ticket holders and 2s 6d to the public. The price of admission downstairs will be Is.

Entries for the Chrysanthemum Show close on Monday, and there are indications a large general entry will be attracted. The Committee has matters well in hand with regard to the preparatory work, and the public will nave the opportunity of enjoying a line exhibition. The blooms are likely to be' outstanding, the season being so good, and cookery will be a draw in itself, as there will be good competition.
Interest in the Competitions starting on Thursday night next is increasing, and the demand for season tickets suggests the public patronage will he ns substantial as, previously. The array or contestants will be increased this season by many outside visitors, including some from Canterbury-. The Coast is specially well represented, A fine programme is set down for the opening night, when proceedings Btart punctually at 7.30 o’clock, The session is a very full one and all interested in the proceedings should be punctual. On Friday and Saturday next there will be morning and afternon sessions at both the Theatre and Town Hall.
An announcement is made to-day of the gala re-opening ball to - celebrate the completion of * the commodious R.S.A. Hall and appurtenances : in Sewell St. The date is fixed for Wednesday May 21st., and the occasion will be a grand fashionable gathering under the patronage of the military and leading citizens, tThe function is sure' to be "very largely! attended. Music will be supplied by the!Black Hand Orchestra, which will be specially'augmented for the occasion. The function is likely to attract a number of exservicemen from/the north as well as from Canterbury.

At a - meeting; of the Grey County Councili .on Thursday, the Kumara borough Goun'ciT wrote asking for a grant towards the heavy expenditure on the Zig Zag Rodd, in order to allow its use by -heavy traffic lorries operating between'the sawmills on the north side of' the 1, Teramakau River, and'Kumara!'
