MOTOR TRANSPORT

VOLUNTARY CENSUS

RECORD OF MILEAGES

TAKEN

WELLINGTON, April 29

A mileage census on a voluntary basis is being taken when owners oi motor vehicles renew their licenses this year. They are to be asked to suppply, states the Hon. W. A. Veitch Minister of Transport, information regarding mileages run by their - vehicles (a) during the year ended April 39, and (b) during the life of the vehicle.

This information, which, from one. aspect, - may be Regarded as the quantitative measure of motor . transport activity, is being sought by the Transport Department. It will be used in conjunction with - other statistical - data in shedding light on thr ramifications of motor transport in the Dominion, and will constitute, one of the threads out of which an. attempt will be made to weave .what, for want of a better term, may be called a road transport balance-sheet. Mr Veitch added that the information was being sought in a manner causing the minimum of trouble. The Government hopes thatthe motoring public will realise that tne figures, provided on a purely: voluntary basis, arc essential if the transport problem is to be fully understood.
