BRITISH EMPIRE GAMES

FUNDS FOR ROWING CREW

WELLINGTON, April 29,

Ways and means of raising money to send a New Zealand eight-oared rowing crew to compete at the British 'iimpire Games at Hamilton, Ontario, in August, wore discussed at a large-:v-attended meeting of past and preent oarsmen and others interested last evening. The chairman was Air Lean, of the New Zealand Rowin' Council, who said that they needed at least £IBOO to send away a crew of ten men with a coach and coxswain. The sum of £IOO9-had been donated towards the expenses by the ommittee controlling the games, and the Olympic Games Committee, who had control over the whole situation, bad agreed to allow all of this donation to form the basis of a fund for m “eight.” Of the balance of £BOO the New Zealand Rowing Association, had given £2OO, leaving £6OO to be found by the various centres. Wellington’s quota was fixed at a minimum of £l4O, and they hoped to raise a good deal more than that, so as to compensate for possible small responses in .some of the smaller centres.

After discussion it was decided, on the motion of Mr Bayfield, secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, that subscription lists be sent to al! former oarsmen and others interested in the sport, and that the Wellington Regatta Club and the Wellington Amateur Rowing Association be asked to organise and conduct a “joy night,” to Be held on a suitable date in the Wellington Town Hall.
