JOCKEY DEAD,

OTAKI, May 1

William Ayre, at one time a jockey and trainer, was found dead last night at his father’s residence. An inquest will be held to-day.

CHARGE OF THEFT,

GISBORNE, May 1

At the Police. Court this morning John Alexander Jones, alias Jack Poole, aged 24, was remanded for a week on charges of theft ‘and robbery with violence, and being a rogue and a vagabond.

FREE STATE SURPLUS. DUBLIN, April 30. Estimating the .budget surplus at thirteen thousand sterling, the Finance Minister, Air Blythe, pointed out here was no need to increase the Free State’s taxation, which had now been stabilised.

A FIRE. WAIMATIE., May 1.

A fire gutted the front rooms of an eight roomed occupied house last night, owned by C. L. H. Gunn, who recently purchased the house, which was being renovated preparatory to the owner moving in. The (building was insured, but the owner will lose heavily.

ODDFELLOWS CONFERENCE. \ PALMERSTON N., May 1. The biennial movable conference of the New Zealand branch of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows was continued this morning when a revision of the rules was discussed. It was decided that Past Grand Masters and Past District Grand Masters (be permitted to attend the movable conference at their own expense and take part in the proceedings, but have no voting power.

The Obstetrical Fund Campaign is practically over here. The total so far in the Otago-Southland area is £5850, considerably above, the quota.

OVERCOME BY PETROL.

HASTINGS, May 1

An accident liable ’to happen to any motorist or mechanic unless he takes special precautions, occurred to a local garage proprietor, C. Ogilvie. He was working underneath a car in a pit at a garage and did not notice petrol dripping on to his clothes from a leaking, carburettor. He was overcome by the fumes and when found two hours later was lying on his face in a pool of benzine, unconscious. Although considerably burned through the action of the petrol lie is progressing favourably. ,

AIERCHANT SUED.

AUCKLAND, Alay 1

O. F. Nelson, a Samoan nieVchant, was sued in the Magistrate’s Court for £350 damages, by Mrs Josephine Wilson-Smith, owner of the Remuera residence which Nelson occupied. Plaintiff alleges that Nelson wilfully or negligently damaged the house. The case is. proceeding.

AN APPROVAL SOUGHT.

WELLINGTON, May 1

Trustees in the estate of the late Alexander Hatriok, of Wanganui, recently sought approval of the Supreme Court to the proposed sale by them of a warehouse site in Wanganui which the testator had directed should not be sold for less than £30,000.

The Chief Justice in judgment today said he was not prepared to make the order asked for. The trustees, however, had acted quite properly in coming to court. His Honour expressed the opinion the proper method of obtaining such authority as that sought was by the Private Estate Bill.
