Women worked beside men wheeling harrows and piling up gravel against tne barricades in an effort to save from the tide, the bungalow village of Winchel-sea. On the beach near the famous thirteenth century village, the sea has burst the barrier of shingle protecting the homes, and flooded a large area, ft is feared that when the tide is at its highest to-morrow, that the houses may be inundated and broad pastures covered.

SHANGHAI, April 27
Hundreds of arrests have been made to-day of, Chinese distributing Communist" literature. Four hundred youthful Reds paraded , the settlement streets and divided into sections of about one lntnclre each. One was endeavouring to hold a meeting in a hall. The police attempted to enter and break up one meeting, hut Phi nose defended themselves with short lengths of iron bars. They were obviously specially prepared. The police who were outnumbered withdrew, but blockaded the building awaiting armed reinforcements, upon which the gathering surrendered and were taken into custody.
