HEAD ON COLLISIONS
A FATAL RESULT.

AUCKLAND, April 27
A - shocking cycle “face accident occurred near Mangere Post Office, yesterday afternoon, in which one amateur rider,. Laurence ; Aldred, aged 19 of Epsom, was fatally injured. Aldfed was a member ...of, ■ the Manukau Cycle Club.' A number of other riders were injured. The occasion was the opening, of the road racing season for cash cyclists and anfaftkdrs. The managing body of the cash, cyclists, the Auckland Cycle Club, had arranged a 10 mile handicap overyythree laps of the tar-sealed roadway; Rhown in cycling circles as the Mangere circuit. Tfee start waS from the Manger© bridge at 2.45 p.m. In the same .vicinity the ariiateur cyclists were . holding two races, a five and a-half mile event for juhiors, and an eleven! mile event for sdfiiors, to mark the opening of the aihateur season. Rating along at a fast speed, with their-heads down, the caSh cyclists did not notice a second batch of the amateur cyclists coming frohi the opposite, directjion,, also in teilt on the decision bfbjheir race. The road is narrow ip !the£#Ls.pity of Mangere Post Office, where the accident happened, and it was ed by motor cars parked VfT the side: With the leaders bun'chedy' the ■ men were not so strung out as they would hive been on a widelyrofid. With r a fearful impact the'front rank { men of the opposite parties met, and the crash could be heard several chains away. The machines were thrown into the air and the riders were hurled to the ground. Several of the injured men were earned up to the school house near the post office. The- accident happened 20 yards from the finishing line of the amateur riders, ... . .
Of the injured riders, William Pratney, aged 19, a farm'hand, of Manure wa,. received grave head injuries, and he is in a serious condition.
