AVAIROA DROWNING TRAGEDY

TAURANGA, April 22.

At Tauranga a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned by Coroner A. I<. Tanks this morning at the inquest on Kenneth Whitworth, 17, who was drowned in the Wairoa River on Sunday morning. The evidence showed that deceased witn two companions, went deer stalking, leaving their car on the side of the river, which they crossed. When returning, Whitworth and one companion, L. Entwistle, attempted to take a short cut by swimming a deep channel, fully clad. Whitworth, who was behind, called out, and then disappeared at once. Entwistle searched repeatedly, but found no trace of him, and reported to the police, who found the body yesterday. The deceased recently left High School, where he was very popular, and was one of the school’s best athletes.

WOMAN KILLED BY CAR

CHRISTCHURCH, April 21

A visitor to the city for the Easter holidays, Mrs AY. M Thyne, of Morven, sustained fatal injuries yesterday evening, when she was knocked down near the intersection of Moorliouse Avenue and Montreal Street, "by a motor-car driven jby Albert Victor Novis, residing at 584, Worcester St. Medical aid was sought immediately and 'Mrs Thvno was taken to the Christchurch Hospital, but she expired before arrival there at 1i.55 p.iu.

This morning an aeroplane piloted bv Allison crashed when landing at Rotorua.. The plane was one in which great interest was attached as it was a home, production of two AVhakatane young men.
