DEER STALKING

SEASON IN SOUTH AVESTLAND

Sportsmen have been favoured with good weather during the last fortnight.

Messrs Morgan and Clouston (Cambrians) have departed with several nice trophies which include two fifteen pointers, 394 by 314, and 44 by 34, both with ai 6 inch beam. They

also have 2 twelves, 394 by 34, and 334 'by 324, and a thirteen, 33f by 304. These sportsmen were stalking in the MacFarlane River, penetrating as far as the Moeraki (Blue) River. Mr Cowan (England) lias two nice heads to date and is still stalking, operating on the Clarke River block. One is a nice shaped heavy royal, 28 by 31$, with .a 6 inch beam, and a fifteen pointer with a. length of 41 inches. Mbssrs Gow and Richards (Rotorua) take with them five heads from the Burke Canyon block, .which includes an 11 pointer, 444 hv 324, beam 5\ inches, and two twelves, 384 by 344, and 354 by 32. Mr Vickery (Invercargill) has one head, the measurements of which are not yet known, and also a twenty pointer but which lacks spread and weight. Lord and Lady Latymer have reached Makarora bringing with them the following trophies:—l(3 points, 38 ffiy 30; 11 points, 40 by 3541 ID points, 374 by 354; H points, 364 by 324, with a 54 beam; 10 points, 37 by 324; 14 /points, 38 by • 29J. Some hundreds of deer were seen but of an inferior quality, The trophies seured were of light structure with the exception of the sixteen. It is said the inferior quality deer of the Otago and AVaitaki, herd are crossing into the Landsborough country in large numbers.

The best trophy to date again goes to Mr W. Livingstone, a keen North Island stalker who has 'been stalking the Young Valley in Otago from which Lord Jellicoe secured his fine royal some years ago. Mr Livingstone’s best head measures 42 length, 39| width and is a heavy 18 pointer. Note:—All spread measurements are taken at widest. part from outside, below'the cup’. .-. ‘ ■
