A MOUNTAIN HUT AT THE HEAP OF THE WILBER FORCE VALLEY.

(To the Editoi.)

Sir, —We hope that you will allow us some space to present an appeal to the public.

Most of your readers will remember the loss of two fine Westland boys in the Wilberforce River in February of last year. These young men were probably.- -drowned ( when: itrying to ;crrws ,'the Unknown -Stream (a .tributary of the Wilberforce' to . seek shelter in the Moa Hut from a r,e ~ vei’e storm. Had a but been available at tlie bead of the river their lives might have been spared. . The, route is a popular one (On-'t to Coast by. Browning’s Pass)-and this is the only stage, where it is necessary to camp out—thus forcing -parties to . carry' the . extra weight of tents, etc., for -Som e five days for their use on one night only. The Canterbury Mountaineer mb Chilb hope to build a hut there, but it is quite impossible to do so out- of pur funds .which are denleted by , the cost of .erection of the Carrington Memorial Hut in the Waimaktu'iri ValPy.

The cost of the hut will be about £IOO, of which the Government may provide half. We therefore a,ppoal to the public to assist us to' build, this ,In t, a piojeet which we think..is worthy of support.. DUDLEY DOBSON, President. F, . T EICHEfiMANN, Vice-President. G. E. MABIN, Treasurer, c/e Bank of Netv South Wales, Christchurch. Canterbury Mountaineering Club (Inc.), 4th April, 1930.
