CORRESPONDENCE.

THE HARBOUR

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Permit me space in your valuable paper to bring before your numerous readers, a matter of great importance concerning the Hokitika Harbour. Now sir, lor some considerable time past we are told that the depth of water on the Hokitika Bar ,s from 16 to 17 feet. Despite this act we have no shipping.

The neighbouring port of Greymouth has had for some time past, ess water on its bar than that ol iO-kitika, nevertheless, they are work,ng big ships like the “Kahika.” WiiaEs wrong with Hokitika.? Some ay that it is the shoaling of bertlige. Surely sir. this can lie reinedd, by bringing the river hack to its Id course alongside the wharf. The- expenditure of a few hundred annuls would accomplish this. I here ,s no denying the fact, with the pro-

sent depth of water on the bar, if the berthage was deepened, big ships would be able to load timber at Hokitika for Australia.

Apart from a shipping point of view if the berthage is allowed to fill up at the rate it is doing, there will siaon he no drainage for the town. Let- us hope the Harbour Board will take the matter up and once again put the Port ol Hokitika on the map, similar to wiiat was done in 19.13 wu.-ea the 'wharf was lined with shipping.

I am, etc., “I EEL’ WATER.” Hokitika. April 15th, 1930.
