REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD
VISIT TO ROTORUA
WELLINGTON, April 12
Travelling in the ministerial coach, Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd, accompanied by Mr Russell Owen, of the staff of the “New York Times,” and Air D. Aide 1.1, of the Internal Affairs Department, left by the Auckland express yesterday afternoon for Rotorua. Mr William C. Haines, chief meteorologist of the Byrd Antarctic expedition, left Wellington on Thursday afternoon and is travelling to Rotorua by car in company with Dr E. Alarsden, director of scientific and industiial research, and Dr E. Kidson, Dominion meteorologist, who are taking the opportunity of discussing with Air Haines the meteorological problems of Antarctica and New Zealand. Mr R ichard AY. Konter, assistant supply officer of the expedition, is travelling to Rotorua by motor-car. Rear-Admiral Byrd and his party will call on the Prime Alinister at Rotorua. They will return to Wellington next Wednesday and on that evening will be tendered a reception at the Town Hall. Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice, will preside.
Rear-Admiral Byrd will leave on Thursday night for Dunedin, where he will finalise the business affairs of the expedition with Mr H. L. Tapley, and will deliver a lecture illustrated by film pictures, on his polar expeditions and trans-Atlantic flight. He is considering giving a similar lecture in Wellington on his return here next week.
Admiral Byrd and the remaining members of his expedition will remain about a. week in Wellington before sailing on the Rangitiki on'Saturday, April 28, for Panama.
