GBBOIINE, April 14

An eight-roomed residence on W. Lysnar’s Arawhara Station, was desiroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. Some of the effects were saved. The house was insured for £550 and contents for £75.

STRONG PROTEST,

AGAINST ALLIANCE OF LABOUR’S ACTION.

WELLINGTON, April 14

Strong exception to' the action of the Alliance of Labour in declaring “black” the committee investigating the operations of the Workers Compensation Act has been taken by the I’etone branch of the Amalgamated Engineers and Allied Trades Union of Workers. In the course of a statement the union declares that while the Alliance professes concern for the labour- movement as a whole it is in reality concerned only with its own organisation. •'

THEFT OF BICYCLE.

PALMERSTON N., April 14

Albeit Reginald Hulena, who admitted theft of a bicycle from behind a picture theatre, but denied the theft of a second bicycle, saying lie was under the impression that he rode his own cycle to town, and left it in the alleyway where later he could not find it, so lie took another bicycle, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent.

The Magistrate said on the second charge convicted accused under ietion 32 of the Police Offences Act.

BYRD’S SHIPS

DUNEDIN, April 14

A/ radio advice received at Dunedin states that the Byrd ship City of New York, arrived at Papeete on v riday night and the Eleanor Bolling is due there to-day from Tahiti. The ships move in company to Panama, where Admiral Byrd rejoins the Expedition.

The Admiral is due at Dunedin on Friday afternoon, proceeding to Wellington the following Thursday to join i,ne Ilangitiki for Panama.

A SERIOUS CHARGE

HAMILTON, April 14

A jockey, Claude James Regan, aged 21, was remanded to-day on a ch’arge of rape.

A pedestrian, walking along Ward St. at 1 o’clock on Sunday morning, heard a scream at a vacant section. He went to the spot where he saw a man and girl struggling. The man told the newcomer he would “clean mm up” if he remained. The visitor then got the assistance of a taxi driver, and found the girl unconscious on the ground, the man having decamped. Hi ore were signs of a severe struggle. The girl was taken to the hospital unconscious, but improved to-day. Regan was remanded in custody till the 30th.

ICC. APPOINTMENTS. WELLINGTON, April 14. Hon G. W. Forties announced today the approval by the GovernorGeneral of the appointment of H. F. Johnston (Wellington) and A. C. Hanlon (Dunedin) to be K.C.’s.
