THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
THE CONTROL OF SAMOA.
One has heard- * of the “bewildered New Zealand public” from publications which have never-sought first-hand information. ; But well might it - be bewildered in ■ view of the changing of ground by the critics, the failure of the movement to-meet falsehood with fact, and the . common .idea that the Samoan is fit to-govern himself. ■'Whether that is so is for; the League of Nations to decide—New Zealand; is only the League’s trustee. ;•>. No one supposes, that our administration has been:,(perfect.; Personally j [ believe that if'New Zealand: could transfer the mandate, to the Colonial Offiee.it would be-the best possible solution. But it is the situation of the moment that now- concerns us and that situation | can be controlled in Samoa without difficulty, provided the propaganda from-New Zealand is stoplied and the fiotioh of “down-trodden Samoa” ceases to'he a slogan in New Zealand party politics; Not until this occurs is there-"likely to he much con-atruct-nfe progress with native cooperation. 1 v '- —Press Correspondent.
