Easter falls much later than usual this year, but there will be no la. k of entertainment for the people. The racing dubs are producing a circuit ’which will extend over six days, and judging by the entries for the Hokitika fixture, the meetings should be very attractive The Westland Racing Club is to be congratulated on the promising outlook for the meeting. Upwards of 80 horses have sought engagements at the meeting, so that tne fields should be well filled for all the events. This will be the first occasion for several years that a twodays’ meeting has been held at Easter, and it will be interesting to note the result. The Club has prepared well, by having a course and appointments second to none of tbe country clubs, and the safety of the tracks and tne oonvenioir'c on the grounds has no doubt greatly helped the popularity of the local meetings. Visitors who have bad the opportunity of inspecting the local course are surprised to see it in so attractive an order at this time of the year, and have also ox•nrossod pleasure at the scope of the appointments and the convenient arrangements for the conduct of the meetings. Although the times are said to he quiet generally, they are far from being hopelessly bad on the Coast. Sport of all kinds is vorv nonular un and down the district, and the, public foregather at all centres where there are attractions. Athletic snorts meetings and wood chopping are again greatly in favour, while there is no doubt about the wonderful hold lining competitions have on the public imagination, equally with racing and trotting. Tn respect to the latter sport, the recent extra two days’ meeting at Grevmnuth on holm!” of
tne Nelson Jockey Club showed how
very popular the trotting competitions are. At Hie furthcoming Hokitika meeting there is to lie a fusion of both racing and trotting on the programme. There are twelve events for the gallopers for which 53 horses have catered, and for the ‘four trotting events there are twenty-live trotting horses entered. There is thus the assurance of good sport, and being a. holiday period, there is likely to lie very generous patronage. Given fair weather the Club should have a very sueeess-
~! meeting, which is something it certainly merits by its enterprise in catering for the sport.
