Native bird-life in the area of the earthquake, which brought much damage to the West Coast of the South Island, suffered a great deal, according to a report received by the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle) from the Ranger of the State Reserves at Golden Downs, Nelson. The Ranger states: “The earthquake that occurred here last June was the means of clearing hundreds of acres of hush from the mountains by way of slips, and the sad part is that the toll of native bird-life must have been terrific. However, very little has happened in the' sanctuary, and the birds have increased wonderfully thanks to the good season.”
Reassurance concerning petrol prices was conveyed in a letter from the Department of Industries and Commerce that was received at a meeting of the South Island Motor Union (reports the Dunedin “Star”). The letter came as a reply to an inquiry about the petrol price situation from the executive of the union. It read: “On several occasions the department has had complaints, and has inquired about the matter of the big oil companies. The companies have said that the prices for New Zealand were very reasonable. The trouble was that the petrol market suffered from overproduction, which made it possible to get comparatively small quantities at low prices. Tne companies are not making undue profits, and it is possible that when circumstances permit they will revise the prices in favour of the public. This department is keeping a close watch on the situation.”
