HOKITIKA GOLF CLUB
HOKITIKA LADIES’-GOOF CLUB
Tile annual general meeting of lady members was held in the County Chambers on Tuesday, Bth April, at 7 p.m. Present, Mrs Maefarlane, who was voted to the chair in the absence of last year’s Captain, Mrs Staveiey, and nineteen members.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and the ‘animal report and balance sheet received and adopted.
ANNUAL REPORT,
Your Committee begs to report as follows for the 1929 season:— Tile past season, despite an unusual I amount of unfavourable weather passed off very successfully, the matches after numerous postponements being ’all completed before the season closed. The returns from tea . days were somewhat smaller than usual, being due mainly to the large number of wet Saturdays and. also to counter attract ioiis and to the fact that the'.condi- ' lion of the links at the beginning of the year necessitated a delay in opening the season. The balance sheet however shows a credit of £6 which under the circumstances is considered very satisfactory. Mrs Staveiey, the Club Captain resigned on lltli November *on account of her removal from the' district ar.d was farewelled at the links by the lady members of the Club and presented with' a suit case. Mrs Staveley, as well as being one of the original members of the ’‘Club had been ah official arid a member of the committee for a number of years arid she will be very hiuch missed for-her active interest in the welfare of the Club. As a parting gift she presented the 01 ulb with a. trophy to be com-
peted for by L.G.U. players, conditions of play being attached. A number of other lady members have resigned during the past year, several being members of long standing whose plates will lie hard to fill. We very much regret their departure-and hope they will enjoy many more years of golf in other parts. L.G.U.—A revision of the L.G.U.
par of all courses at the beginning of the year was responsible for the par of our course being- reduced by 4 strokes. Arrangements were made with the Secretary for the N/Z.L.G.U. to liave the course played over by two Metropolitan players with a view to testing the fairness of the reduction but earthquakes and bad weather prevented these players from making their visit. As. a consequence a numb-i c-i players were deprived of
the L.G.TJ. handicaps and two Silver Medal players■: re-entered . the Bronze Medal Division; leaving only one com.petitor, in,..the, Silver, Medal Division. We~aropleaseil’to"repdrl that.a nuiij- ■ her; of ’plh^&rs 1 " i lave - iV ’-now : 'regained • their L.CjI.U. handicaps and one Bronze .Medal player has earned a handicap placing her in the Silver Medal Division, once more ensuring competition in that Division. Matches The Club Championship was' agi’iri . won by Miss Moore, the Bronze Medal was won by Miss King and the Beare Boivl by Airs Cooke. There. was ho, competition for the Sil- - „ Medal. ‘Only cite lady represented the Club at the West Const Ciiariioionship meeting ri-t AVestport and there was one representative of the Club at tlie New Zealand Ladies’ Championship meeting held at Christchurch.
Improvements:—During the year a stove was purchased and a small kitchenette was erected. This has proved a..great boon to ladies providing tea u Saturdays and is very much appreciated. Our thanks are due to .uosc members who donated small amounts towards the purchase of the stove, the balance required amounting to £4 . being paid from our own funds.
Jn connection with the vacancies arising from the departure of many of our regular playing members and the consequent smaller attendance on the links on Saturdays, yo-Ur committee recommends That the rule with regard to players in the Unearned Handicap Division be revised in order to allow those young players whose occupation prevents their playing a score any other time, to play scores on Saturday afternoons. The position at present is that these players have no opportunity of playing " a score which would earn them a L.G.U. handicap and your committee suggests that the rule be amended to prefeide this opportunity from which they are at present debarred. Your committee would also suggest that there be a, revision of the
allocation of strokes as shown on the
lady’s card for bogey and other similar competitions. Since the revision of par it would appear that a slight revision would be in the interests of phiyers in these, competitions. , In conclusion the thanks, of the Club are due to the ladies for providing tea on Saturdays and assisting with lunch and afternoon tea on the occasions of inter-club matches, to donors of trophies for matches, to the Press for their courtesy in publishing details of matches, and to the County Council for the use of the' County Chambers for our meetings. Arising out of the annual report from the out-going committee it was resolved to allow junior players whose occupation prevented their playing any other day of the week to .play stories on. Saturday ' afternoons, \the rule to be amended accordingly. The election of officers then took place and resulted as follows: — Captain: Mrs Neville. Secretary: Mrs Langford. Handicap Manager: Mrs Chesney. Mem,her of Committee: Miss Lewis. A hearty vote of thanks to the re-
tiring officers who had 'tendered their resignations was carried unanimously. Regret was expressed that so many members had severed their connection with the Club oil account of. their removal from the district apd that " two of the members present at the meeting, Mesdames Burns and Baird would also shortly be leaving. This concluded the business of the ladies’ meeting, a vote of thanks to the chair terminating tlie meeting.
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual general meeting was held in the County Chambers on Tuesday last a.t 8 p.m. Mr J. C. Macfarlane presiding over ain attendance of thirty members.
The minutes of the previous annual general meeting were read and confirmed.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
1 have the honour to report on the operations of your Club for the past year as follows: Matches : —Club Championship, Mr E. Partridge; Ladies’ Championship, Miss M. E. Moore (holder); Opening Mixed Foursome, Miss Moore and Mr Irwin; Final Mixed Foursome, Miss J. Houston and Mr Chesney; Mixed Foursome Handicap (Mr Cox’s trophy) Mrs Langford and Steel; Men’s Fourball Bogey Handicap, (Mr Chesney’s Trophy), Messrs Irwin and Cagney; Captain versus Secretary teams match,, Secretary’s: foam ; Medal Aggregate, (Oranstion -Vase),' Mr ‘T. Cagneyp Ifogey. .Aggregate,.(Captain’s Trophy)Mr ’Chesney; Hole-infone-club, Mr 1L F. Cooke qualified. The usual monthly medal and . bogey matches were; also played.; ! Seddon Challenge Cup:—Tw 0 matches, on each occasion on the Muhina - pua Links, were played with the Greymoutli Club which were successful on both occasions. The .*games provided a pleasant interlude to the usual club matches and from a ocial
and also instructive aspect were much
appreciated. Matches between secondary teams from the Hokitika and Greymoutli Clubs were also played alternatively at each place and although the Hokitika teams suffered
defeat on each occasion, the lady members thereof wore successful on the second occasion in annexing the Caliari Clip which they still hold. The Field Cup played in conjunction with these matches is held by the Greyiiiout]] Club. West Coast, Championship:—-Held at Westport. A number of players
from this Club attended the meeting and; I am pleased to record that Mr Chesney. qualified for the, finals and put; up a very creditable stand against 'the winner, Mr A. Siam. Tlie meeting will be held this year at Hokitika.
Membership-The membership at. tlie close of the season stood at- the satisfactory figure of 109, full members. Owing however mainly to transfers an t'musunl number of resigiial.ions are in* band, lint'it is 'hoped, to make tip; a cohsidp'raible amount, if not tlie whole of the delicienov by tlie election of hew iriemliers this year. I might here mention that golf ; in Hokitika with the ideal facilities provided is the cheapest in the Dominion and any resident of the town or country who has any intention cf ever taking up the game should Hot lose the opportunity offered by this local advantage.
'Ground Improvements:—The links this yar are in better order than they have ever been; due mainly to the enterprise of your committee in pilfehasirig a new motor mower whi'li is .a)ble to operate over the whole course. Credit is also due to the groundsman, Mr F. Groufsky, for his good work and also to the lessee of the grazing, Mr Mclntosh, who has kept the property well grazed. Finance:—The financial position of the Club notwithstanding unusually large calls in the way of expenditure, on the. pavilion and purchq.se of‘ the new motor mower must be regarded as. very satisfactory.
We are however facing the new season ; with only, a small credit balance and it is a recommendation of the present committee that every effort be> made to conserve funds to meet liabilities which will 'be incurred by the holding of the West Coast Championship and general maintenance. Tt is also generally considered that efforts should be made to create a sinking fund, and the incoming committee might see its way clefl'r to set aside a small amount in this direction.
Professional Coach :—Mr Lambic again visited the Club during the season, with satisfactory results- Owing to his resignation n.s a coach under the New Zealand Association, Mir Melvin will act in his stead this season and has Ibeen engaged by your
Club for one week from the 28th April to the 4th May. Members desiring] coaching:'should hand in their name, to the Secretary of the Club as early as possible.
The outgoing committee recommends that a Mixed Foursome Handicap be played on Saturday the 12th instant as the opening match of the season. , The balance sheet was then read by the Hon. Treasurer who wa.s congratulated in the manner on which he has taken up his new duties and
the satisfactory position which the balance sheet disclosed in regard to collection .of outstanding arrears, which is worthy of special mention. Trophies ,won during the year were then presented. Eleven , new members wei;e elected. election of officers.
Tlie election of officers for the ensuing year resulted:—. , Captain: Mr J. C. Macfarlane. Hon. Secretary: Mr Geo. Adamson. Hon. Treasurer: Mr J. A. Chesney.
Committee; Mesdames Neville and Langford. Messrs Wilson, Neville, Cooke, Cagney and Steel,
