DEFENDANT FAINTS
POISONED CREAM CASI
WANGANUI, April 5.
The ease in. wfhich Matthew Lee Rogers, manager of the RuaJiineUangiwahia Dairy Factory, was charged with selling the Maoriland Dairy Company cream which contained potasium bichromate —a poisonous preservative—was suddenly adjourned on Saturday morning when defendant fainted while under enrs-exa mi nation, ft was explained that he had been up all nig ! >t at his factory and had had no food the previous day. Mr L. Oolton, for the defence-'’, s'id that two suppliers of the Ilnnein'nhin factory had had cream rejected 'v defendant, fn one case there were maggots on the surface of the cream, and in the oHier the!"' was a distinct llavour ol kerosene.
Defendant, in evidence, said that the two suppliers whoso cream he rejected sent it to the Maoriland Company. Witness decided to m-d-e a cheek test on the Maori land grading. He decided |o send a poor quality cream. So that the contents of the sample Inttb-s would make a good cxi'erinr'id, be told his assistant to he c.arT-l n"l to put nreservative in the bottles.
