WELLINGTON, April 9

In connection with Hon. Ransom's statement regarding the withdrawal of the survey party from the South Island main trunk railway, the. Minister explained that the party would return to main trunk work as soon as the weather became too severe for working in Lewis Pass locality. The position of the survey on which this party was engaged, was such that it would not hinder the wodk of construction. Some twenty-six miles had been completely surveyed from Wharanui southward to a point about eight miles beyond Clarence River, and including Clarence bridge site, but at the south end, a party was still employed on the survey from Parnassus northward. The Minister added that lie had authorised the placing of a further fifty men on the Parnassus end of the construction of the line
