AUSTRALIAN TARIFF

5 T U.S.A. COMMENTS

L’United Press Association'—By Electric ' Telegraph—Copyright.]

NEW YORK, April 7

The. New York 'limes, in a leading article entitled “Protectionist Australia” states: The new duties "are symptomatic of a state mind which cannot but affect this country as weir as Britain.” ‘ After discussing the increase of the Australian tariffs in. recent years, the article continues: “The 'American manufacturers may now better understand the resentment of the Canadians and South Americans ’"against . th'e increases in the American tariff on the various staples of those countries. It is 'in relation to the scheme for free trade within the Empire that this latest act is ohieffy interesting. Britain has enjoyed "a preference on most of her goods entering Australia, but the opposition to preference is steadily growing. In fact the avowed purpose of ' this emergency measure is to , cut Australian imports by about sixty million dollars. In England itself this plan cannot but dampen the ardour- - of/the advocates of Imperial Free Trade. . The latest tariff act of Australia- makes it more than plain that ' the Britisdi Dominions will have none of this sort of special privilege for England. They are thinking of their own needs first. However, mistaken itheir policy may seem to be to the .advocates of Imperial Free Trade it cannot be ignored that the tendency in Dominions is clearly towards more, and not less protection.”
