STREET JACKAL BUSY
WOMEN'S PURSES STOLEN
AUCKLAND, April 5
A street jackal was busy in the city yesterday. Two women had/hags containing valuables snatched out of their shopping baskets—one in Quay Street and the other on the safety zone in Customs Street.
While standing on the safety zone at about 9 o’clock- last night, Mrs Evelyn Roper, of 17, Arafii St. Sandringham, -felt a tug! at her kit basket, but at the time thought that soiheone had bumped into her. It was not until she hoarded the tramcar that she discovered her purse was stolen from he‘V basket. The 'purse contained £8 15s, made up of one £5 note, three £1 notes and. 15s in silver, as well as the .:ey of her house. The bulk of the money was her.-husband's wages, which he had handed‘hei'ltearly la.st evening. Immediately she-- ( djkovered her .loss, Mrs Roper rejipftddgthe matter to the police. 3 *3 .

Atkins, of 63, Park Hoad, Grafton, had her handbag snatched oiit oft a basket, which she earied on leer arm last evening. She lost about £3iblos in money and a trinket box containing about ten three-pennjb bits—“lucky” ones, which she had collected from Christmas cakes. Miss Atkins had'been shopping yesterday afternoon. She called at two Queen St. stores, and when she left f'ho second she placed her handbag in lie basket.- There was a crowd of men round a motor-car which had broken down. Tn her effort- to see all she could, she lost her bag. So securely was the bag placed jn the basket that she is sure it could not have dropped out, end is certain that it was cleverly stolen. She reported her loss to the wharf police.
